Lucet is a method of cord making or braiding which
is thought to date back to Viking times. A bone lucet believed to date
to the Viking period was found at Lund, in Sweden. The lucets we use are
wooden and have two prongs at one end and a handle at the other. The
size of the lucet varies depending on what feels most comfortable for the
user.
The cord made by a lucet is square, relatively
strong and slightly elastic. It is made by winding the yarn around the
prongs, forming loops, which are then lifted over the working yarn with the
fingers and tightened to form the cord. Lucet cord can be made to any
length and is ideal for the lacing on costumes or drawstrings for pouches.
The simplest form of lucet cord to make is monochrome but other colours can be
added into the design."
